How much does a website cost in Peterborough? Real prices from local and Ontario web designers

Most small businesses in Peterborough should budget $1,000 to $5,000 for a professional website, plus $300 to $600 a year to keep it online. A simple 5-page site built on Squarespace or Wix sits at the bottom of that range. A full marketing site with custom design, SEO foundations, and lead tracking sits at the top.

Below $1,000 you're usually buying a template with your logo dropped in, or renting a website you'll never own. Above $10,000 you should be getting e-commerce, custom integrations, or a brand-new identity built alongside the site.

That's the answer. The rest of this explains where your number lands, and what to watch for before you sign.

What web designers serving Peterborough actually charge

Most Peterborough web design agencies don't publish their prices. You fill out a form, book a call, and find out after 45 minutes whether you can afford it.

So I went and collected the ones that do. Here's what agencies and freelancers in Peterborough, Cobourg, Kingston, Barrie, and Toronto publicly advertise for Peterborough-area clients in 2026:

What you're buyingPublished price rangeWhat it usually means
"Starting at" discount offers$150 to $600A template with your content swapped in. The real price shows up in the quote.
Monthly website rental$25 to $125/monthHosting, domain, and a basic site bundled together. You pay forever and usually don't own it.
Freelancer or small studio, 5 pages$1,000 to $3,200A real, professional small business site. The sweet spot for most local businesses.
Agency marketing site, 8 to 12 pages$5,000 to $12,000Custom design, copywriting, SEO foundations, tracking, integrations.
Custom agency build or e-commerce$12,000 to $30,000+Custom development, online stores, booking systems, member portals.

For context, Bark's 2026 data puts a small business website in Peterborough at $780 to $3,900 and a custom business site at $3,250 to $9,750. Ontario-wide pricing guides put freelancers at $1,500 to $7,000 and template-based agencies at $5,000 to $12,000.

The ranges are wide because "website" covers everything from a one-page brochure to an online store. So let's break down what each level actually gets you.

What $150 to $600 actually buys

You'll see these offers: "Professional website design starting at $149.99." Sometimes $595 for a "starter" WordPress template.

At that price, nobody is writing your copy, planning your pages, or thinking about how a customer moves from Google to a phone call. What you're buying is a pre-made template with your logo, colours, and whatever text you send over pasted in.

That can be fine if you just need something online. But read the fine print. "Starting at" almost always means the number you actually pay comes after a quote, once pages, forms, and revisions get added.

The monthly rental model, and why it costs more than it looks

Some providers will build your site for little or nothing up front and charge $25 to $125 a month instead. Hosting, domain, and email are bundled in.

It sounds affordable. Do the math over three years:

  • $75/month for a 5-page site = $900 a year
  • Three years in = $2,700, and you're still paying
  • Cancel, and in most cases the website goes with them

That last point is the one that catches people. A lot of local business owners only find out they don't own their website when they try to leave. The domain is registered in the agency's name, the site lives on the agency's account, and moving means starting over.

If you're in that spot right now, you're not stuck. More on that below.

What $1,000 to $3,000 actually buys

This is where most Peterborough small businesses should be shopping. At this level, a good freelancer or small studio should deliver:

  • Around 5 pages: Home, About, Services, Contact, and something like Pricing or FAQ
  • Mobile-first design. Over 70% of local searches happen on a phone.
  • On-page SEO basics: page titles, meta descriptions, headings, image alt text
  • A contact form that actually reaches you
  • Google Business Profile, Analytics, and Search Console connected
  • A site you own and can edit yourself

Published examples from businesses serving our area: a Cobourg studio offers a 5-page site for $999 as a founding rate. A Peterborough studio lists 5-page packages at $2,200 and $3,200. A Toronto studio advertising to Peterborough charges $1,995 for its mid-tier build.

What this range doesn't buy: in-depth copywriting, custom-coded features, content strategy, or ongoing SEO. It's a solid foundation, not a marketing engine.

What $5,000 to $12,000 actually buys

Here the website stops being an online brochure and starts doing a job. You're paying for:

  • 8 to 12 pages, including individual pages for each service you offer (this is what helps you show up for "drywall repair Peterborough" and not just your business name)
  • Strategy before design: sitemap, wireframes, and copy direction you approve before anything gets built
  • Custom design, not a recycled template
  • Conversion tracking so you know which pages produce calls and form fills
  • Integrations with booking software, CRMs, or email marketing

This is the right level for an established business that's going to run Google Ads, invest in SEO, or depend on the website for a large share of new customers. If the site isn't going to be pulling that weight, you don't need to pay for it yet.

What $12,000 and up buys

E-commerce stores, member portals, custom booking systems, multi-location sites, and full rebrands. Ontario-wide guides put dental and medical sites at $7,000 to $22,000 and e-commerce at $5,000 to $40,000+.

Most Peterborough small businesses don't need this. If someone is quoting you $15,000 for a 6-page site for a local service business, ask what you're getting that a $3,000 build wouldn't give you.

Don't forget the ongoing costs

The build is only part of it. Every website has running costs:

Ongoing costTypical price
Domain name$20 to $50/year
Hosting or platform plan (Squarespace, Wix, WordPress hosting)$150 to $600/year
Business email (Google Workspace or similar)$100 to $200/year per person
Maintenance plan (optional)$50 to $300/month

A maintenance plan makes sense for WordPress sites, which need regular plugin and security updates. For a Squarespace site, it's usually optional. The platform handles security and updates for you, and most owners can make small edits themselves.

Why Peterborough prices are lower than Toronto's (and that's fine)

Toronto agencies regularly quote $5,000 to $12,000 for a small business site that would cost $2,000 to $4,000 here.

You're not getting a worse website by paying less. You're skipping a cost structure: the downtown office, the account manager, the sales team. The platforms are the same. The design tools are the same. The way Google ranks a Peterborough plumber is the same whether the site was built on King Street or George Street.

What I charge

I publish my prices because it saves everyone a call.

Website in a Weekend: $1,000

Website in a Weekend is my fastest, simplest option, built for two kinds of businesses:

  1. New small businesses that need a professional website live quickly without a $5,000 commitment.
  2. Businesses that are done overpaying. If you're paying an agency or a monthly rental fee for a dated website you don't control, I can take your existing content, photos, and reviews and rebuild it into a polished Squarespace site that you own outright.

What's included:

  • A 5-page Squarespace website: Home, About, Services, Pricing and FAQ, and Contact with a form
  • Google Business Profile optimized
  • Google Analytics, Search Console, and Google Ads tags connected, so your site is sending the right signals from day one
  • Your domain connected (or a new one, free for the first year)
  • Two rounds of revisions. Not a "here's your site, good luck" handoff. Anything beyond that is $70/hour.
  • Ready in 2 to 3 days once I have your content

The only other cost: the Squarespace plan, about $393 CAD a year, paid directly by you to Squarespace. The site is transferred to your account, so it's yours. No lock-in, no monthly fee to me.

Run the same three-year math from earlier: $1,000 + ($393 × 3) = about $2,180 total, for a site you own. Compare that to $2,700 and counting for a rental site you don't.

Why Squarespace? It's easy to hand off. Most owners can update their own hours, photos, and text without calling anyone. And in my experience building sites for local businesses, Squarespace sites tend to rank well in local search with the right setup.

My full website pricing

Every build includes mobile-first design, on-page SEO basics, Google Business Profile, Analytics, and Search Console set up, and a website you own outright.

BuildPriceWhat's includedBest for
Website in a Weekend$1,000, plus about $393/yr for SquarespaceUp to 5 pages built from your existing content. Live in 2 to 3 days.New businesses, or switching away from an overpriced provider
Landing Page$1,800One high-converting page: strategy, copywriting, and conversion trackingAd campaigns and single-offer promotions
Business Site$3,500Up to 7 pages, copy written for you, a dedicated page for each service, conversion trackingLocal businesses that want to show up in search for every service they offer
Growth Site$6,500Everything in the Business Site, plus a keyword plan and 12 SEO blog posts, published on a schedule over your first 3 to 6 monthsBusinesses ready to build organic search traffic from launch day
Authority SiteFrom $9,000Custom design, e-commerce, booking or CRM integrations, scoped per projectOnline stores, multi-location businesses, complex builds

Why spread the Growth Site posts out? Publishing steadily keeps your site growing month after month instead of all at once, and every new post is another page that can bring in a search from someone looking for what you do.

Planning a Growth or Authority build? A strategy and wireframe sprint (from $750) maps the site before anything gets built, and the fee is credited toward your project.

Add marketing to any build

  • Google Ads management: from $320/month
  • SEO: from $500/month. Here's what SEO costs in Peterborough and what each tier buys.
  • Updates and one-off help: $70/hour

Marketing is month-to-month. No long-term contract.

Five questions to ask any web designer before you sign

  1. Who owns the website and the domain when we're done? The answer should be "you." If it isn't, walk away.
  2. What happens if I stop paying? If the site disappears, you're renting, not buying.
  3. Who writes the content? "We'll use what you send us" and "we'll write it for you" are very different prices.
  4. Can I update it myself? You shouldn't need to email someone to change your holiday hours.
  5. Is SEO and Google Business Profile setup included, or extra? A website nobody finds isn't doing much.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a basic website cost in Peterborough?

A basic 5-page small business website in Peterborough typically costs $1,000 to $3,000 from a local freelancer or small studio, plus $300 to $600 a year for hosting and a domain. My Website in a Weekend option is $1,000 plus about $393 a year for Squarespace.

Is it cheaper to build a website myself?

Yes, on paper. A Squarespace or Wix plan costs a few hundred dollars a year. What you're really paying for with a designer is time, structure, and setup: the pages laid out to turn visitors into calls, SEO basics done properly, and Google Business Profile and tracking connected. If you have the time and the eye for it, DIY is a reasonable starting point.

Squarespace, Wix, or WordPress: which is best for a small business?

For most small Peterborough businesses that want a site they can manage themselves, Squarespace or Wix is the simpler, lower-maintenance choice. WordPress gives you more flexibility, but it needs ongoing updates and security work. I build most small business sites on Squarespace because it's easy to hand off and performs well in local search.

How long does it take to build a website?

A simple 5-page site can be live in 2 to 3 days if your content is ready. A Business Site with copy written for you usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. On a Growth Site, the site launches on that same timeline and the 12 blog posts roll out over the following 3 to 6 months. Custom builds are scoped per project.

Can I switch web designers if I'm unhappy with my current site?

Usually, yes. If you own your domain, it can be pointed at a new site. If your current provider owns it, ask them to transfer it to you. I can rebuild your existing content, photos, and reviews into a new site and help with the domain move.

Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile and Instagram?

You can get by without one for a while, but a website is the only online asset you fully control. It's where your Google Ads point, where your service pages rank, and what customers check before they call. Social platforms and directories can change the rules any time.
